Akaroa Salmon
Akaroa King Salmon is 100% NZ owned, 100% NZ King Salmon, raised sustainably, with a really strong connection to the place with Duncan Bates and his father Tom and Ōnuku marae. Customers internationally don’t know the difference from King Salmon to Atlantic Salmon. Customers think all salmon producers are alike and don’t understand how much extra work ( and cost ) it takes to produce 100% NZ King Salmon. Ben is keen to understand the Akaroa Salmon point of difference and see how it’s farmed.
Ben meets Nik Mavromatis at the Akaroa wharfe and takes the boat out to meet Willi Manuel, Akaroa Salmon’s Farm Manager to watch and learn the Akaroa Salmon point of difference. Ben and Nick cook salmon on the shoreline overlooking the Akaroa harbour.

He wants to to understand where the idea and concept came from and why the oil is SO good. Ben then visits a rapeseed farm where the seeds are being harvested. It’s the first time Ben has seen a rapeseed. He learns all about it from Keith Gundry the Agronomy Manager. Ben also visits the factory to see how the seeds are processed and the oil is manufactured.
